Help Support the Rule of Law

Understanding, protecting, and upholding the legal principles that safeguard every person's rights and freedoms.

A Nonpartisan Guide for Arlington Residents

No person — regardless of wealth, office, or status — is above the law. The rule of law means that laws are publicly known, applied equally, and enforced through fair, independent institutions that protect individual rights.

— World Justice Project

Four Key Principles

  • Government authority is granted and limited by law

  • Laws apply equally to all persons, including those in power

  • Rights and liberties are protected by independent courts

  • Legal processes are fair, transparent, and accessible

What is the Rule Of Law?

The Four Pillars of the Rule of Law

Drawn from the World Justice Project's universal framework for democratic societies.

⚖ Accountability

Governments, officials, and private actors are accountable under the law. No one — regardless of position or power — is exempt.

📜 Just Laws

Laws are clear, publicized, stable, and protect fundamental rights — including human rights and civil liberties for all.

🏛 Open Government

Processes for enacting, administering, and enforcing laws are accessible, fair, and efficient — open to public scrutiny.

🔐 Accessible Justice

Justice is delivered by competent, ethical, independent representatives and courts that are accessible to all people.

Know Your Rights

1st:
Free Speech & Assembly

Right to express views, assemble peacefully, petition government, and practice religion freely. Government cannot restrict speech based on viewpoint.

14th:
Equal Protection

No state may deny any person equal protection under the law. Foundational for civil rights protections against discrimination.

4th:
Search & Seizure

Police generally need a warrant to search your home or property. MA provides additional protections beyond the federal 4th Amendment.

MA:
MA Civil Rights Act

Prohibits interference with rights secured by law through threats, intimidation, or coercion — applies to private actors too.

5th & 6th:
Due Process & Fair Trial

Right to remain silent, to a speedy public trial, to confront witnesses, and to legal counsel in criminal proceedings.

ALL:
Immigrant Rights

Regardless of immigration status, all persons in the U.S. have constitutional rights including due process and equal protection.
